Nyungwe rainforest is located in the southwestern Rwanda, at the border with Burundi, south, and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, the rainforest is presumably the best saved rainforest in the mountains all through Central Africa. Nyungwe Forest is situated in the watershed between the basin of the river Congo to the west and the basin of the river Nile to the east. From the east side of the Nyungwe Forest comes additionally one of the branches of the Nile sources. Nyungwe National Park was established in 2004 and covers an area of about 970kmĀ² of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs. The closest town is Cyangugu, 54km to the west of the park. Mount Bigugu is situated within the park borders.

Indeed, the number endemic species in the Nyungwe Forest national park is more amazing than in any other forest in the Albertine Rift Mountains that has been studied. The park has maximum altitude of 3000m above sea level, the park is also particular interest for the vicinity of colonies of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes -Blumenbach, 1775) and Angola (Colobus angolensis -Sclater 1860), the last now extinct in Angola for the powerful hunt for which they were subjected.
